so what that private servers had it. there are more mmorpg's where english is main language. infact. 4game/innova have english as their main language aswell. website is mainly in english (yes some translated versions available) and arent these boards generally english aswell?

imo shout is a public place like these boards where the main language should be the main language of the community. the european unions main language is english.

so why not shout? its l2eu isnt it, not l2pl, l2fr, l2de, l2it etc. is it?

so what if shout will look like a mess? who are you that you think that the game should be best fit for your personal preference?
there are like 4 dozen languages spoken in europe, why should we be restricted to use english, in a korean made game, provided by a russian company, in europe?
if you can't understand the shout , then you are not supposed to understand it couse they are not talking to you.

the ones who don't use english will soon realize that if they want people to understand what they are shouting they are better off using english if they can. just like on any other server i've been playing at where shout was not restricted, and on the ones it was, people simply didn't use shout at all.

"the european unions main language is english." you are kidding right? ask a french...

ye fun, if it was for my personal preference, i'd request shout to be dutch.
besides its not a personal preference, its a sign of respect to speak a language in a public place that others can understand aswell.
now shout belongs to the biggest amount of players per country. while this happends, there are still allot of people online from different countries. i barely see any french, german, dutch, italian or even spanish in the shout. its mainly a few languages.

it seems like most can respect eachother as noticed, allot choose not to speak their native language. if everyone speaks foreign languages everywhere, its looks allot less 'retail'.

again, isn the main language used at l2eu, innova and 4game... english? if i go post in dutch all around the boards, mods will close/remove/move them no? why is the shout different?

    oh and btw

so more then 51% is not main? its secundary isnt it? =)

personally, i'd prefer all shouts to be in english.
i myself abstain from using my native language in-game, because it evokes certain attitudes and prejudices against me due to my nationality (which most of them are true to the majority of ppl from my country, especially of those i met in game, who didn't know i was polish as well, so i guess they aren't made up out of thin air.)
i do believe it would benefit everyone if non-english conversations were excluded from shout and trade channels, but i think the main reason why it won't happen is that many, if not most, people, whose first language isn't english aren't that well versed in it to use it effectively. they are better off asking in their native language, knowing that they could expect an answer that they'll understand and knowing that their question won't be misinterpreted.
as you could see in this topic, generally people who possess enough proficiency in the english language have no problems using it in shouts and generally tend not to use it in-game, except with close friends.
but honestly, as an english teacher, i must say i'm not surprised that so many shouts are in different languages. anyone would prefer clarity in the message, which excludes a group of people, rather than risk being misunderstood, but by everyone.
    cheers

as some ppl said-if u dont understand the shout-its not adressed to u, so just skip those lines. i was in polish server for some time, if they piss me off i`ve learned some "cool words"to shout em back :) its good way to learn other languages. and another thing-i dont wanna talk with ppl from my country in english when i can use my own native language, its weird....

and whuts wrong with the shop zones, they save alot of time running arround actually >.>

i agree completely, it makes places like giran or aden bearable, everything is nice and tidy, you know where to look for things and have space to actually move around to find'em. but it'll be tad different now with the auction manager i guess, anyway, so we'll have to see.

yes, but shouts aren't really meant for elaborate conversations between people, that's what the general/party/clan and ally chats are for. not to mention pms. i think there's nothing wrong in using your native language on shout in smaller chunks, but people tend to use it as a normal chat channel, only which the whole area is bothered by.
i think that's the problem, because then other messages simply get lost, drowned in the gibberish of few people unintelligible by the others.

    let's make it clear:

eveyone will use english, but if i want to shout for a recruitment, it will be in hungarian and not in english, because my clan is hungarian only. same goes for every country, clan recruitment or in general case for all. it's not about personal preferences, this is how it works everywhere and in every mmo. it's not meant to being spam until you don't spam your messages. in wow the main channels used in english also on english realms, even if there is only 1 uk guys with native english, but noone complains when you shout for a recruitment in your own native language. same as everywhere on every (even private ones) server in l2. you guys just found a theme that can be cryed over on it wich is pathetic a trollfeeding. everybody knows that it will be in english and you'll see only a few non-english line at the shouts. get over with it already.

god of the english language who hails from poland, i bow to you!

on-topic: it would only make sense to make the shout english-only. this has nothing to do with that private server ****, it's simply about enforcing a rule that will help improve the communication between players. let's see what happens if this rule will not be enforced: you'll have 80% of the shout in greek, polish and maybe some russian here and there. so the "minority" who doesn't happen to be from there will feel excluded from the community. i remember spending 3 years on a private russian server. i had no clue about half of the **** that was going on, simply because i didn't understand russian. i was stuck to a small group of players who speak english, yet are totally oblivious to the server affairs, just like me. now i understand this blade cuts both ways, and people who don't understand english will feel the same way. but in complete honesty - nowadays you are ought to speak english. plus i'm sure everyone understands english (at least to some degree). and another thing is - it would be a mess if everyone just shouted in a different language. the shout would look like an alphabet soup.

i would love if they make shout english only, it's not a private server thing...it's in a lot of mmorpgs f2p/p2p. my first language is not english but i never use shout in other languages simply because you have to show some respect for the rest of the players, if everyone speaks in their own language no one will understand **** and shout will be spammed in all languages.

just like in the forum there are places where you speak on your own language, in games there must be an english only chat. also it would cut the trolling/spamming by 90%.

^this, better worded then i did.

and its just shout, its not like anyone here is requesting to have everything english only. shouts are often handy to communicate with other players in the area. normal text, who cares. you take a few steps and you wont see it. trade is as obvious, for trade anyways. and there's always still whisper, party, clan and ally chat.

indeed. often enough it goes on for hours already and its just open a few days. and dont know if its all polish, but sure its mostly eastern european languages.

i sounded like a pompous *****, haven't i? but i really wasn't trying to show off or anything, it's just the way i write, and i never claimed my english is perfect. i know it ain't.

i really like this argument. i think it should be a nr 1 reason why shout should be eng. only.

what difference does it make, what language to shout

if you cant understand the language someone is shouting so that means its not for you. how simple is that? if anyone would search for something he/she will definitely will use language for all to understand. i think it would be english.

simple solution to all this is join a guild that has english as their main chat, and talk to them instead :) just turn off your shout.

however i agree, language should be english. or have different servers have a different "main" language, but this will reduce the player-base on not so popular languages.
