Ruby is better. Ruby lvl 5 gives +20%, opal lvl 5 gives +12%.

Soulshot damage is 50% of your final dmg. So final dmg from ruby is not 20%, its less than opal. Still wondering why ppl give more importance to ruby/saphire than opal.

Bcuz it's easier to have +++ weapon, than ++++ element.

    So final dmg of 5lvl ruby/sapphire is 10% ?

But how about opal? How much attribute defense has all mobs?
And in pvp, if opponent has high attribute defense we will probably do less than +12% dmg with 5lvl opal, than with 5lvl ruby/sapphire?

Because you consider only lvl 5 while ppl don't pop directly with lvl 5 (well...)
While opal lvl 2 or 3 or even 4 may not let you reach any breakpoint, ruby lvl 1 directly increases your dmg output.
Imo lvl of the jewels is something missing in the question :p

But thats exactly my point. Elements are a way of "pvp dmg", because its dmg that is added at the end which ONLY take element resistance into count. So if you dont have much element, it means u have around 300, which means you ALWAYS increase your dmg by this 12%. The only way you dont get such increase is when you pass the 220 gap compared to ur oponent which means u either have around 700 element or u have only 200.

Elements work always like this, if you have less atribute atk than ur oponent resist(less than 220 gap) you always get a fixed% of increase in dmg, in total max variation is ~50% (25%+ /25%-)dmg.

Elements are just a way to keep up with ur enemy, he gets higher element resist, you get higher elemental atk to not widen the gap (incase your weaker than enemy so your element is not "negative") while enemy wants to widen hsi gap with his elemental atk to get max "positive" element.

This is something i would like to know aswell, i dunno if element varies by monster or level and what is the most apropriate element value to achieve.

Maximum damage increase from +120 attack attribute is 75% -> 90% dmg

That's an increase of 20% to your absolute damage under ideal conditions, the same as a lv.5 ruby or sapphire add at all times. On the other side of the spectrum, it's 110->125%, which is only a 13% increase in absolute damage.
NCSoft test of damage increase by ruby/sapph posted here http://boards.lineage2.com/showpost.php?p=3420349&postcount=8
shows that they do not increase the damage part added by using soul/spiritshots but total damage.

if you can only get one, get ruby/sapph.
If its for pve, why not use both? *shrug* I guess you're aiming at lv 5 obs dia pea + 1 for dmg in pvp
Just to get one of them lv5 is a big investment, if you're willing to spend that for one you can probably pay for both.

Then my point maintains, with the missunderstood of this poor description. What should say on ruby/sapphrie is that your damage is increased by 20% while SS are active, not say that the damage from SS is increased by 20%.

I do agree with Yuna for the last post (still trying to get the meaning of his previous one), I thought a lv. 5 ruby was +10% final dmg (100% base + 120% soulshot), but it seems it's in fact +20% on the final damage while SS are on (who doesn't active his SS ? oO Oh, tanks and isses in PvE xD )
