    Actually there are 3 points for society, at least from what I know from the law here..

    1. Things stolen, which is the financial damage..
    2. Means used to steal, which can be by abusing trust, via threat (can include weapons, blackmail, etc.) or hidden (like breaking in when family is traveling somewhere else).. Hidden is the one with the smallest punishment, since it's the one that causes least emotional damage and doesn't put ppl at risk..
    3. Danger to society, since things tend to repeat..

    So I'm saying if give back, can at least repair some of the damage done.. and even in today's laws, if you give back what you stole (by your own will, without being forced to), you get less punishment.
    Even regret, if it's really evident, can lighten the punishment, since it decreases the chance of point "3", to repeat. That's why motive is also important.

    Anyway, just try to sort it out and lets hope for the best..
