an age old question - added atk of a staff or the defence of a shield and one handed?

im lvl 58 and notice that shields give alot of p.def and thats before my buffs. also noticed that the two handeds dont give a huge amount more dmg, at least not enough to make a huge diff for a healer? also the shield doesnt help against m.atk mobs :p in a party does m.atk significantly improve healing? and is it worth the loss in cast speed?

what do ppl think? consider all tasks ie pve, pvp, solo and party etc

p def with shield? shield gives a chance blocked attack by it - this is the main thing about wearing on pvp/pve shield.
